POSITIVE
✓ Bold - In spite of his devil-may-bare attitude, Nate loves to push boundaries and discover anything new. He’s brave and adventurous and wants to go places, but would never use those words to describe it. ✓ Charismatic - Having grown up in a pureblood household and sit on the same lessons his family did, the boy has developed a silver tongue. He is witty and has high levels of confidence. Some people find him charming. ✓ Energetic - Stemming from his need to always solve a problem, he has a lot of energy and only gets more excited when faced with a problem that isn’t easily solved. He finds it difficult to do nothing for very long and will adopt pet projects. ✓ Honest - Sometimes on the line between honest and cruel, Nate has no problem being straightforward when asked. Sometimes viciously so as he does not hold back. On the other hand, those he sincerely trusts know to believe him. ✓ Knowledgeable - He has never, to his knowledge, ever passed up a chance to learn something new. Even if it isn’t something he particularly wants to know, he takes pride in his obscure knowledge of just about anything. At least enough to point people in the right direction. ✓ Organized - He hates a mess. He hates being caught off guard. He might be flexible and he might be quick on his feet, but he loathes when things are chaotic without reason. There should at least be a reason. ✓ Perceptive - He won’t change the way he really is for anyone (yet), but Nathaniel understands when to present parts of him. He knows how not to stick out and notes when there are small shifts in other people. ✓ Quick thinker - also known as a good liar - Because of his obscure knowledge about even some of the most ambiguous things, he is a great liar. He knows how to shift in thoughts and come up with someone plausible to get himself out of trouble, as well as using it to prove whatever point he’s making. ✓ Rational - He’s not much of a philosopher, but he does like using information for personal gain. (Slytherclaw, they call him. Just a bit too resourceful). He might enjoy out-of-the-box knowledge, but he puts deliberate and thoughtful plans into action. He doesn’t like to do things half-assed. ✓ Sociable - Part of being charismatic is being genial. It might sometimes (most of the time) be for show, but Nate is generally good-natured. He rarely lets things get to him. He’s a natural leader, even if he doesn’t always volunteer for the position and enjoys people-watching. (Great at networking.)
LIKES
✓ Charms - Charms are game-changing additions; he loves the class and he understands how most contributions to the field are useful and necessary. Besides, he’s good at it. Besides, they make life easier. ✓ Cleverness - He enjoys being witty and enjoys it in other people. If they’re a bore, they’re a waste of time. Clever people make for good conversation and, occasionally, people surprise him with their wit. ✓ Dark chocolate - He doesn’t like any other sweets. Regular chocolate has too much milk or sugar or cream and, no, he prefers the more bitter taste of dark chocolate. ✓ Gossip - Despite the reputation that it gets, he enjoys it for the amount of information that can get back to him. He is a very network-y person and being in the know allows him to stay ahead of any competition. ✓ Instrumental music - It calms him down and allows him to focus instead of trying to figure out what the artist is trying to say. It can either hype him up or relax him, depending on what he chooses to play. ✓ Obscure books - Because, there is nothing more fascinating than a book that few others own. He hoards more than just a couple with him wherever he goes, sometimes for the sake of pulling them out when people are boring him. ✓ Transfiguration - Despite liking charms, there is something fundamentally amazing about taking something and changing it into something completely different.
DISLIKES
X Chaos - Unsanctioned and caused by people other than himself. He doesn’t like to be caught off guard. Even if he’s good at thinking on his feet, he doesn’t like to have to because someone left him out of the loop. X Frumpy People - Do they not care about what they look like? Are they trying to give the worst possible impression imaginable? Because they’re succeeding. People should put more effort into how they look. X Idiots - There is nothing worse than someone who cannot pick up a book or any other readily accessible source of information and learn something. These people are scum and a complete waste of time. X Overly Happy People - Why are they so happy? What are they trying to compensate for? They’re trying too hard and he knows it. No one is that happy all the time. It’s suspicious. X Public display of affection - Don’t get him wrong. He’s all about cuddling and kissing his partner when they’re alone, but doing it in public where everyone’s watching? Not unless it’s with spite. Otherwise, people need to get a room. There are literally hundreds at Hogwarts. X The Daily Prophet - Runs too many smear campaigns and is only good in the hands of those who are rich. Which, don’t get him wrong, his family is among them, but they continue to have a monopoly on the opinions of many. Which he doesn’t like.
NEGATIVE
X Argumentative - If there is one thing Nate likes, it is to dispute. Nothing is off grounds if he is in such a mood; gets a kick out of tearing down other people’s beliefs, particularly if they aren’t aligned with his own. X Defiant - He doesn’t like to be lectured - doesn’t like to be told how to live his life unless it’s someone who’s opinion he’s asked. Despite not liking things being sloppily done, he is contrary enough to not care if the work is tedious enough. X Deliberate - He doesn’t do things without a reason. Will almost never do things without a reason and those reasons are thought out and calculated. It might not seem like a bad thing, but he will not go and help others unless he 1) has a plan and 2) can get something out of it. X Easily bored - For the same reason he’s so intelligent, he also tires of things and people. He hasn’t had a romantic partnership for long because he grows too accustomed to patterns and doesn’t want to. He will readapt plans to make things more lively if he needs to. X Indulgent - While not immediately a bad thing, he gives his family and friends more freedom than he would give anyone else. They are the only ones allowed to see the real him as he cares a great deal about his social status. (Probably forgives his family for too much, but oh well.) X Insensitive - There are times when Nathaniel doesn’t quite understand the people around him. He doesn’t understand why they get too emotional when they can be logical in debates. It’s when his blunt honesty works against him. X Intolerant - Despite what some may believe about him, he isn’t intolerant of blood status so much as their idiocy. He will not deal with overly emotional people and, wickedly, enjoys making them feel awful about themselves. X Judgmental - Admittedly, he has some strong convictions. He was raised a certain way and, while he understands that there are some people who can’t agree with that lifestyle, still finds it difficult not to come off condescending when speaking to them. X Overthinker - He doesn’t always accept things easily. Being raised in the higher society (and then in a den of snakes), he is constantly on the lookout for underlying motives. X Untrusting - For that same reason, he doesn’t trust easily. His family has been through too much (what with his uncle and his father) and people look down on them for that reason. So he doesn’t give them a reason to, but can’t shake the suspicion regardless.
Daphne Greengrass had been an exemplary witch in her own right. Never vying for attention, she topped her classes and her social circle with poise and understanding. Her family was decidedly neutral in every war effort and held various positions of power. Enough to bring prestige to the family, but not so much that they were a threat to the shifting tide of those who wanted to take power from the purebloods. Perhaps it was unfair that they hadn’t really needed to work for it. At home, Daphne was the eldest girl of two. Since she had been a child, she was preached the importance of marrying rich - of social climbing higher than she would have needed to if she had been born a boy. She took it in stride, turning down offers at school from anyone socially beneath her. Did it endear her to the fellow students? No. Did she care? Not particularly.
Theodore Nott was a loner. He preferred it that way, actually. He had spent his childhood mostly alone, with house elves for company and the occasional ‘play date’ that wasn’t actually a playdate. It was a scheduled cover for whatever his father had planned. His family was emphatically dark in every war effort, though never to the degree that it was obvious. The Notts were famed for their stances on muggles and muggleborns, true, but also renowned for their competence. His grandfather had been a ‘friend’ of the Dark Lord, had shared a room with him in Hogwarts. His father had not been one to stray from tradition. It didn’t matter that Theodore generally couldn’t bring himself to care much about the public; one did not break tradition in the Nott family. He was lucky, perhaps, to have been on the younger side of their social group. Had been lucky, perchance, that Potter and his merry band of do-gooders had overthrown the Dark Lord when they had; he very nearly had to continue the tradition of a marred left forearm.
Admittedly, Theo cared for very little and very few. He could count the number of friends he had on one hand. Oh, he knew how to be charming. He knew when to be social, but fancied being on his own. He was an easy target for Daphne Greengrass. No one who knew the two were notably confused when they began dating a year graduating. A year more and they were married. Were they the epitome of a perfect couple? No. But, they understood each other and grew to care for one another.
Nathaniel Cyril Nott - and his sister, seven minutes and forty-nine seconds later - was born on May 23rd after a broken hand (Theo) and five hours of labor (Daphne). Even before he had been born, Nathaniel was an asshole. He had not been a patient fetus. He moved around constantly and took whatever space he could from his sister. Yet, for all the trouble he gave his mother during her pregnancy, he was an easy baby. He cried only when he was hungry, when he needed changing, when no one would put him to sleep and nearly every time his father tried to pick him up with his cold, frozen hands. He much preferred the warmth of his mother. He slept through most nights, normally taking up as much space from his sister as possible. When he could speak, his first word was “No” and his second ‘Mama”. His third word, debatably, was “Why”.
The Notts were not socially recluses, much to the displeasure of Theodore. Daphne whisked them away to events; some work related and some not. She took people’s pointed glares and barbed whispers in stride. It was a lesson she tried to impact on her children. Nathaniel took to it easily. He never let anyone’s opinion of him color what he thought of himself or of his family. That wasn’t to say that he took things for granted. Both Daphne and Theodore had tutors and their children were the same. He loved it - not the tutor, who was a snivelling pitiful excuse for a man. The learning. Using all the information he gained to prove himself superior to those around him. Admittedly, it didn’t do much to curve the superiority complex he was developing.
He wasn’t the least bit surprised when he received his Hogwarts letter. He’d always been told he’d be attending his family’s alma mater, although he made a good argument to both his parents about how lacking it was as a school and how much better he’d be off if they allowed him to go to Durmstrang instead. He wasn’t surprised to be sorted into Slytherin, though his mother had teased him about being a Ravenclaw. The house of eagle was far too...lenient for his taste and he had places he wanted to go, people he wanted to see. The Sorting Hat hadn’t even hesitated for a moment. He sauntered his way to his new house as his robes swished green and silver. He joined his cousin and dug in. To his professors, he was a willing student with a slight tendency to be sarcastic, but always eager to help. There was the occasional penchant for forgetting assignments, but few and far between enough to overlook it. To everyone else, he was the arrogant asshole with a brutally honest mindset. The boy refused to lie needlessly. When he did, they were thought out and confirmable.
And now I see the sunrise
He started dating at fourteen. His first relationship was with an older Gryffindor - he claimed to know it was headed towards disaster, but he wanted to see where it went. The affair in its entirety lasted four days before he told her that she was the most uninspired and tedious person he had ever had the displeasure of dating. Mostly because she’d wanted him to walk her to his class. (Ridiculously so as he was scheduled to be at a different part of the castle at the same time. What did she want from him? To be late to McGonagall? No.) When he was fifteen, he made prefect and pretended to be perfectly shocked at the fact. Was he? No. He’d been the essence of charming and helpful around his professors. It was also the year he decided to go into politics. There were plenty of exploitable clauses in Wizard law that would work to his advantage.
So, he knew that there were certain rights that were never going to be afforded to certain individuals. He knew that it was morally wrong to continue to subjugate them. That, no matter how hard they worked, they still had to wear the stigma of being born anything but a wizard. But, the fact of the matter was that he was a wizard. And rich. A rich wizard. So he didn’t much care for the others. Was it selfish of him? Yes. Entirely so. But, there was good money to be made in exploiting the law and protecting business affairs. He felt for the hardworking individuals, if barely. He couldn’t stand to be surrounded by people who expected things to be handed to them or those who couldn’t take care of themselves. Hated them with a passion and mercilessly let them know. It was just that he had a goal in life and wasn’t about to let anyone interfere with it. He wasn’t the type to get caught up in a whirlwind romance. Wasn’t the type to let anyone think themselves superior. He’d achieve his ambitions, smirk, and look good while doing it.
