Fred is the oldest child born to George and Angelina Weasley. He had a great childhood; seriously, no complaints. He loved growing up with a huge family and always having someone to hang out with or talk to. He's not as close to every cousin, but they've made excellent test subjects in his practical jokes and pranks. When it came time for his Hogwarts letter to arrive, Fred had heard numerous stories from his older cousins about how awesome Hogwarts was. As much as he loved his parents and sister (although he would never admit it at eleven years old), Fred was ready to get the hell out of there and go off to school. He was sorted into Gryffindor which was a surprise to literally no one.
Although not by appearance, Fred has been told how similar he is to his namesake. He likes to tease his dad by saying he got his good looks from his mother's side of the family ("Not that freckles and red hair aren't cool, Dad"). While some of his cousins may feel pressure to live up to their name, Fred never experienced that. He never felt like he had to "replace" his uncle with his wicked sense of humor (wicked in his mind, at least). He's never had a problem with being his own person or feeling like he needed to live up to someone else's legacy.
Nevertheless, Freddie has always loved to hear stories about his late uncle. The happy ones, of course; and there were many. Reminiscing on those memories seemed to have a joyous effect on the adults. From a young age, Freddie could sense that something was missing from his dad, like pieces of his heart and soul were gone. His dad didn't talk much about his twin's death or how he felt about it; this sadness was something unspoken. The loss of a twinkle in the eye, perhaps.
Fred swears he can feel his uncle's presence at Hogwarts. Not in a creepy, "I see dead people," way, although he has gone looking for his uncle's ghost before, to no avail. If his uncle were a ghost, he wasn't at Hogwarts. It's just a connection, a closeness, that Fred feels - hard to describe but pretty trippy. He's never really told anyone, except to a couple of cousins when they were all intoxicated.
Not much offends Fred. He's super laid-back and is not easily affected by other people. He doesn't much pay attention to the world's problems. Some people might dislike his blissful ignorance, but if something does not directly or negatively affect him then he doesn't really care. He concerns himself with his friends, family and having fun. He's impulsive and often acts without thinking with little regard for potential consequences. He's loud, says what he wants and probably has offended someone at least once with his pranks. He's generally well-intentioned, but his reckless nature has landed him into trouble several times. There might as well be a reserved sign with his name on it in detention, because more often than not he spends his free time there.
Freddie has worked at his father's shop since he was thirteen. Initially, he did inventory things during summer break because George wanted to keep his son busy and therefore out of trouble. A couple of years later, Fred was coming up with new product ideas, figuring out the logistics and design. He had always known that he was going to run the family business one day. Therefore, he figured he didn't have to try all that hard in school, at least not in the classes that didn't matter.
It's not that he's necessarily lazy, per se; he just has more important things to do with his time than slave away over schoolwork. He gets a great amount of pleasure from messing with people, especially his younger cousins. He's never done anything hurtful. Well... except for that one time he maybe not-so-accidentally cursed one of his female cousins with boils that didn't go away for a week. Then there was that other time he gave an obnoxious Slytherin, who liked the same girl as he in fourth year, a treacle tart that made him horribly gassy in front of their crush. Really, it was the Slytherin's fault for taking food from him in the first place; the bloke should have known better. But all relatively harmless pranks. He hasn't been expelled yet so that's a plus.
Fred's apathy towards schoolwork goes beyond not caring, however. Fred has always had trouble paying attention. Even in primary school, he constantly got in trouble for not listening or staying still. His parents didn't realize anything was wrong for many years. They figured he was a normal inattentive, hyperactive little boy. When this extended to his first year at Hogwarts and his professors were saying the same things, his parents took notice. They went to a Healer who also specialized in Muggle medicine. She diagnosed Fred pretty quickly as having attention deficit disorder. He took some herbs and draughts to start with, which helped a little bit for a while. The Healer then gradually worked towards Muggle pills for Freddie to take. He wasn't used to Muggle medicine so that was a bit of a slow process. Currently, he's back to taking draughts, though not as regularly as he should. He still has trouble concentrating on one thing for a significant period of time, but Freddie has never been overly concerned with his ADD. When it comes to inventing gags and novelty items, Fred develops an almost laser-like focus. Honestly, his creations are one of the only things that never distracts him - probably due to his incredible passion for it.
Quidditch has also really helped him focus. Freddie is one of the Gryffindor chasers, and having to be on constant alert of different balls and players flying at him has done wonders for his focusing. He's also not too shabby in aiming and throwing the Quaffle through the hoops. It took Fred a couple years into puberty to shed his lanky, gangly figure, but Quidditch helped a lot with making him stronger. He's not as intense about the sport as some of his other family members, but he enjoys playing with his friends and family. And listening to the Gryffindor crowd cheer his name whenever he scores. That's definitely the best part.
