Freddie had had another unfortunate encounter with Filch. Why was it that whenever he had somewhere important to be or something important to do Filch was always there with his stupid nearly-dead cat, lurking in the shadows, just waiting for him to screw up? Did he look suspicious today with a cauldron full of ingredients and vials of misty blue liquid in his arms? He didn't think so, but apparently the bane of his existence had a problem with it.
Argus freaking Filch had stepped around the corner that he was two feet away from, scaring him so badly he nearly dropped the cauldron and all of his ingredients. A high-pitched yelp had regretfully left his mouth from the shock of it all. How did Filch even do that? Did he have the Marauders Map or some weird sixth sense that literally knew where he was at all times? "Stop right there, Mr. Weasley," Filch had disdainfully sneered - and that was not an exaggeration. It took a huge deal of effort not to roll his eyes. He and Filch had a long, complicated history. Fred swears the man still holds a grudge against him for accidentally stepping on Mrs. Norris' tail back in second year, even though it was the cat's damn fault for sleeping in the middle of the corridor in the first place. She was basically asking to be stepped on!
Filch approached him and took - without asking for permission first - his cauldron. Was he seriously going to get detention for having potion supplies? For doing schoolwork? OK, not schoolwork exactly, but it was close enough. Filch took his precious time - not that the man had much time left to waste so really it was in his best interest to hurry the hell up - examining each and every ingredient and vial. He even had the audacity to open the cork of a vial and smell the liquid. Freddie was positive that Filch had not an ounce of an idea what he was looking for. It wasn't as if he had drugs or anything. They were plants, for Merlin's sake! After ten years passed, he dropped everything in Fred's cauldron and impudently asked him, "Are these illegal?" Now, Fred didn't dislike many people, but Filch - well, that man was high on his list of "people I can't stand." Top five, at least.
As calmly as he could, Fred explained that no, these ingredients are not illegal and would he please give back his things so that he can do his homework. Filch hemmed and hawed for a few minutes longer but finally gave Freddie his cauldron back. Muttering a quick and insincere thank you, he walked away, albeit slowly because no way was he getting caught a second time. That would surely land him in detention. It wasn't until he reached the stairs that he all but ran down them and into the next corridor. After all that drama, of course it was just his luck that he ran straight into someone, nearly knocking the cauldron out of his hands for the second time today. He really needed to look where he was going...
