POSITIVE
+ Friendly - Jasper’s a people person, who loves to socialise, get to know new people and hear their stories - he’s got an open demeanour which makes people feel comfortable around him and a soft and charming crooked smile which he showcases often. + Intuitive - He’s very conscious about other people feelings, and goes out of his way to make sure people feel comfortable and happy when they’re around him. He’s the sort of guy that even the shyest and outcast students feel comfortable around, because he always makes an effort to make them feel valued in any given social interaction. + Artistic - Jasper’s been creating things since he could pick up a paintbrush, and making art has always been one of his greatest passions. A highly creative individual, it’s not uncommon to find various art utensils tucked behind his ears, or an errant paint stain on his hands or clothes. + Adventurous - Jasper loves to seek out and experience new things. He will most likely always say yes to whatever adventure you might suggest to him, even if it might not be particularly well-thought through - if it means travelling to new places, doing fun things, or just having a new experience, he’s in! + Affectionate - From clasping an acquaintance’s shoulder, to pulling in his friends for hugs, and pecking frequent kisses on his lovers’ cheeks, Jasper is free and easy with showing his affection for the people around him. He just loves people, and being close and comfortable with them, and has no qualms about showing how he feels. + Cheerful - As a pretty easy-going guy, Jasper has a reputation for being nice and happy. He really hates negative feelings and does his best to avoid them at all costs, smiling, laughing and enjoying life as much as he can.
LIKES
+ Muggle disco music + Drawing + Socialising + Parties + Smoking + Coffee (Black. Very black) + Halloween + Travelling + His (not so) baby brother + Kissing
DISLIKES
- Confrontation - Unnecessary rudeness - Sweet things - Being interrupted - Smoking - History of Magic - Cheats - Criticism - Being alone for too long - Practical Jokes
NEGATIVE
- Pushover - He’s not one for confrontation, and Jasper really lives by the idea of running away from his problems until the problem stops existing - this means when he’s faced head on with something he doesn’t want to face, he doesn’t really know what to do, so just tends to give in.It also means he can end up being intimidated by and feel uncomfortable with more forceful negative personalities. - Sensitive - Though Jasper understands that sometimes criticism is important for improvement and progress, it really cuts him deep when he’s criticised - or even as it happens, should he have to face any sort of negative energy directed at him. Ergo, his tendency to avoid his problems like the plague. - Restless - Jasper likes to be kept busy, doing interesting things all the time. This would be great, if it didn’t mean that he wasn’t constantly distracted from whatever things he should be focussing on. He really has a hard time spending long hours sat in the library doing work - his mind just wanders as he thinks about all the other things he could be doing with his time. - Weak-willed - Jasper has a bit of a hard time saying ‘no’, whether it’s to himself or to other people. He doesn’t really deny himself any of his indulgences which he knows are bad for him (like smoking or the unholy amount of coffee he consumes on a daily basis), or doing what other people expect of him. - Insecure - Though Jasper does a pretty good job at boxing away his problems and setting them aside, even he can’t escape them forever. He is self-effacing most of the time, and a lot of people see this as him being humble, but really it stems from a real lack of confidence in his abilities. It stops him from really being able to put himself out there more with his work, and particularly his art. - Disorganised - Jasper is disorganised on every level - from the state of his wardrobe, and planning in advance, to keeping on top of deadlines and remembering where he last left his favourite pencil (which is always still tucked behind his ear from when he last used it). He’d probably just stop functioning altogether if he ever had to live alone.
Jasper Marlon Kirke was born to Andrew and Tracey Kirke on a bleak winter day on 3rd December 2002. He was the couple’s second child, but first son, and they were delighted by the new arrival after what had been a relatively easy pregnancy and delivery. Tracey often laughed as her children grew up about how Jasper had been her most easy-going child from his conception. Their mutual friends had warned them about the stress of having a second child, and they’d been prepared for it, but raising Jasper proved to not be as hard as they had anticipated. He never fussed quite as much as their first child and daughter, Annabelle, and slept as well as they could ask for; truly he was all round a very pleasant child to have. This didn’t alter as he grew up through his toddler years and into childhood either - he was polite, thoughtful, and only threw tantrums on rare occasions - he was their child that smiled. He had his moments of restlessness, but this was nothing in contrast to his siblings.
Their eldest Annabelle, had been as difficult as any first baby for a couple, and she seemed to take fairly well to the new arrival when she was about two years old. They were of different temperaments, but she seemed to like having a little brother to dote on. But the family didn’t stop growing after Annabelle and Jasper - enjoying the family they were creating together, Andrew and Tracey had two more children in quick succession: first Rory, and then Lucas. Truthfully, the couple would have probably liked to have had even more, but they were challenged by the dynamic of that house with that many children under the age of five. Perhaps, Tracey had thought to herself more than once, if they’d all been as easy to deal with as Jasper, there would be more - but she didn’t ever let herself dwell on that too much, for she loved all of her children far too much to care.
The dynamic between the children became clear fairly early on, and there was a distinct power struggle between Annabelle and Rory, between which Jasper was caught in the middle. Both were louder, more dominant, and fought for control in a way which he wasn’t predisposed to. It mattered less when they were young children - as they fought for control in the games they played, Jasper was content to do his own thing and act as their mediator. This often meant sitting with crayons and paper in hand, and keeping an eye on baby Lucas, whom he adored. It was as they got older, as Annabelle stopped caring quite so much about the opinion of her younger brother and started playing with other friends her own age, that Rory started to turn to Jasper for attention. Without Annabelle for the protection he was used to, Jasper ended up finding Rory particularly overbearing, despite the fact he was younger - Rory was rude, as well as off-handedly mean in a way that he said was teasing, but that Jasper was too sensitive to take well.
You would be waiting for a long time if you ever expected Jasper to say he didn’t love his brother - he did love him, it just…wasn’t always easy. The years haven’t softened Rory, and his brother just didn’t seem to get Jasper, in the same way Jasper didn’t get him back. Jasper’s too soft for Rory, and Jasper is uncomfortable at the way his brother teases and jeers - engaging in a form of masculinity that he doesn’t understand. It’s hard to be around, even to this day. Annabelle gets it to some extent - she thinks Rory’s a bully, but she’s not bothered about telling him that to his face, so she doesn’t get bothered by him. And Lucas, well - Lucas is stuck somewhere between the two brothers.
Jasper had always really cared for his youngest brother, and enjoyed the way he looked up to him and wanted to learn from him in a way that Rory ever did; he felt protective over him, and eventually, Rory ended up feeling protective over Lucas too. It feels strange to think of it as a competition, because it shouldn’t be a competition, they’re family - but sometimes Jasper can’t help think he and Rory are in a battle over their influence over Lucas and he’s losing. Lucas has grown into a very sweet young man, and Jasper doesn’t like thinking that Rory is trying to change him into something he’s not - but Jasper would never have a chance of fighting Rory over it anyway. He runs away from the confrontation and casual aggression Rory presents him with; he hides. He shouldn’t really be surprised if in the end Lucas becomes more and more like Rory, even if he doesn't like it.
Despite his somewhat tense relationship with one of his brothers though, Jasper has found comfort in his time at Hogwarts. He thrives around other people, meeting them, learning their stories and learning from them - doing new things and exploring - Hogwarts and the Hufflepuff house has truly become a home to him in his seven years in the castle. He may not be top at all of his classes, but he is happy, and has a reputation for being a stand-up friendly and cheerful guy, which he prides himself on - it’s the sort of thing he’s glad to be known for. Though graduation looms he’s not so worried, as he knows that can only mean more places to explore and people to meet.
