in the beginning
The Kirkes already had two children by the time Rory came along, though he was by far the strongest, smartest, and all around best member of the family before he could even walk. Or so he tells it. His sister was his sister, the girl of the family, the one who couldn't run a piss up in a brewery because she just didn't have the spine to be a leader. Or so Rory tells it. Then there was Jaspy boy, the eldest son, the heir, so to speak, if they'd been one of those kinds of stuck up pureblood families. And what an heir he was, scared of is own shadow and wetter than Annabelle when it came to most things. Jasper was absolutely useless as a big brother, unless you wanted to look up to a complete pansy. Or so Rory tells it.
Louder than his siblings, little Rory ran rings around them all, and soon realised how fun it was to try and be the boss. He would get his way one way or another, and knew how to assert himself and make sure he was seen and heard, and his desires taken account of in any situation. Rory was not a wallflower. Rory would grow up to be the backbone of the Kirke family, and the one his siblings looked to when they needed help or support, or someone to take care of them. He was never scared of a fight, and would argue until the cows (oh, look, a mention of his favourite animal!) came home. Annabelle would try and argue with him, and it was great entertainment for a kid with too much energy to burn and parents who were too busy raising four children to have much free time to play or do other fun things.
A fast learner, and an eager student, Rory was often told by their dad that he would shine when it was time to go to Hogwarts, and he knew that his parents tried to encourage his good traits and ignore his domineering, competitive ways in the hopes that if they paid no attention to them, they would fade away. They had no such look in pushing out his less desirable qualities, but they were right about his schooling. He was sorted into Ravenclaw to the surprise of pretty much all of his family (they had expected Gryffindor, but it appeared he was smarter than he was bold), and boy did he excel there.
He made friends quickly with other strong personalities, and went about his school life with confidence and drive. He joined the Quidditch team in his second year as Seeker, and took great pride in the admiration it brought him, with people commenting on how great he was on the pitch, and stroking his ego. He knew he was good on a broom, but that wasn't enough for him. He wanted more power than the acclaim of catching a Snitch, and so he made it well known to his professors that he wanted to be a Prefect. Of course he wouldn't be able to stay on the team if he became a prefect, but he also made it known that he was willing to drop the sport for the new title.
He remained Seeker throughout his fifth year, and then his young life was pretty much made during the summer before his sixth year when a shiny Prefect's badge came in the post. Rory could not have been happier with the new role he had been given, and now half way through his sixth year, he thinks he's been doing a pretty stand up job of it, and of course he hasn't been on the occasional tiny power trip here and there... Of course he hasn't. Definitely not. Well, he doesn't need a badge to kick Jasper's arse, does he? And it's another reason for Lucas to look up to him. With Jasper graduating soon, Rory will be free to influence Luc in any way he likes, and Jasper's soft, stupid ways won't be passed on to another member of the Kirke family. All will be well.
