When her parents had told her that magic was real, she just nodded. Magic had always existed, it just happened to be trapped behind a screen and only accessed with a few button presses on a controller. With one cartridge, you could shoot light coated arrows; with a small disk, sail the oceans wherever you pleased by conducting the wind. It was only after a small sigh through smiling lips that her father taking out a wand, lifting the game controller out of her hands and replacing it with a wax sealed envelope. Alex's eyes didn't focus on the letter, too absorbed by the floating object before her. It was like motion controls, but instead of pretending to swing a golf club to hit a pixilated ball, it changed things in reality.
She wanted to try it straight away. When told that she'd have to read the letter first, she poured over every word. It reminded her of sitting in the back of the car reading through an instruction manual or strategy guide on their way back home from the shops; just a taste of what was to come. She read it. And read it. And then her parents came back after a while, just as she folded the letter back into it's envelope.

character creation
The Great Hall was her tutorial level after the cinematic train journey. There were tight-knit parties of friends who had grown up together, newly formed groups of less-than-strangers who had exchanged pleasantries on the train. The compartment she'd slipped into was very quiet upon her arrival, and there was minimal conversation. She didn't mind; eavesdropping on their whispers was much more interesting. One long journey was a speck of dust in the timeline of her Hogwarts career, so she had plenty of time to make friends not based on some vague Stockholm syndrome.
Even as she lined up to be sorted, something she had continuously asked about, she could only remember one fact that her father told her every time; "I was a Slytherin, and I managed to make you," he smiled. It was only when she felt the stares of thinly-veiled disapproval when the name was shouted from the hat that she truly understood the meaning behind his smile. Alex didn't flinch and strode to her table, taking a free space next to a green-clad senior. It'd be okay. She just needed to choose the right options.

In first year, Alex brought all the parts for a computer tower in her suitcase. Two days in, she realised there were no plugs for her to test it out.
In second year, she brought a retro, battery-powered handheld console to test if the batteries would survive the excess magic. An internal battery overheated within five seconds of being turned on.
Third year had her throw caution to the wind and bring her muggle phone to play rhythm games on. Her father reluctantly bought her a new one for Christmas.
Last year she promised she would stop trying. A howler arrived in the first week, to which her defence was "The solar panel adapter never charged it enough under the lake anyway".
This year, her Muggle Studies professor gave her written permission to bring in as much Muggle equipment she required and desired, and he would place it under protective charms as long as she provided demonstrations for his classes. She was the only one interested in her short speeches.
