A DECENTLY AVERAGE CHILDHOOD...
When Laurena Tompkins, a young witch, was introduced to the Beatles by a young muggle man one could say she was lost to that music forever. Laurena and the man, Bradley Florence (a humble hotel owner), took to each other right quick when Laurena stopped to stay at his hotel in his small town. Laurena trotted into the hotel and in the middle of requesting a room had to pause and listen to the song that was playing in this man's lobby. Bradley smiled when he noticed her brows furrowed and her face intent as she listened to Hey Jude for the first time. He politely told her the song and the band which she smiled bashfully in response, feeling embarrassed for having gotten so distracted.
That was the first time this pair met and Laurena extended her stay by two years.
On the night Bradley proposed to Laurena was when she revealed herself as a witch. Bradley, taken aback, fainted almost immediately upon seeing magic. All was well when he came to and became more familiar with what it was like to be engaged to a witch. They were married in two months.
Bradley was the most excited when Laurena revealed that she was pregnant. They kept the hotel in good condition and set aside a room in the house to be the nursery. They hoped and hoped for a boy. All seemed well.
Much to their surprise, a baby girl was born to them on June 23rd. Laurena was both elated and dismayed. She named her Jude Olivia Florence (despite Bradley insisting that Jude could only be a boy's name). Jude cried and cried so often, but when she smiled and giggled both Bradley and Laurena were elated.
After a couple more years, Laurena fell into depression. She and Bradley argued more and more. The toddler cried in the background of each argument. She told Bradley she loved him but that she felt caged by his hotel. Bradley was heartbroken. Laurena left them for a little over an entire year.
One of Jude's earliest memories was when mum returned home. It was on her 6th birthday. Laurena cried and Bradley cried. Jude felt sad, too, although she couldn't understand why or what was happening. Laurena and Bradley continued to be married, but it was different now. Laurena came and went, officially keeping her magical life separate from her muggle family. Bradley ran his hotel. He started to take heart medication.
Jude's memories of childhood were split between mum and dad for the most part. Sometimes they would all be together, but she could tell it made mum and dad sad. They loved each other, but mum was too much of a free spirit for their relationship to be stable. They were staying together for her. When they weren't all together, Jude was with her father at the hotel or muggle school. Then whenever Laurena would visit, she would whisk Jude away for magical adventures and teach her about the gift of being a witch. She told her fantastic stories about Hogwarts, of which she'd been a Ravenclaw, and about how much Jude would learn there.
She received a letter to Hogwarts. She went with her mum to purchase robes and books and get her wand and such. She had an amazing first year. Jude and her father wrote back and forth. Her father wrote more than she did. Upon returning home for the summer, Jude noticed her father was weaker than at Christmas time. He seemed sadder too. She spent lots of time with him, which seemed to brighten him up and make him happier. He told her that she would always be his "pride and joy."
It was in the middle of her second year that an owl came. A grave message from her mother letting her know she was going to pick her up shortly, as her father had passed away. He had been struggling with illness secretly and left the hotel to Laurena. Jude still can't remember parts of the months that followed, swallowed in grief.
She went from sweet to prickly. She pushed away friends and kept to herself. Jude spent lots of time with her ginger cat, Catherine (Cat for short). But slowly she came around. She got back into playing quidditch with her friends, who were gracious enough to forgive. She did well in her classes again. She transitioned from overwhelming grief back to her feisty self (with the grief present, but not quite the same).
Jude found a passion for speaking up. She found a passion for proving herself against the boys who were tough on her (and eventually became her friends). She found a passion for Charms. She found a passion for justice. Jude decided her dream would be to work in the ministry of magic one day. For now, she's decided to kick some ass her 7th year.
