Life in the Scamander-Lovegood household was nothing less than fantastical. At any given moment, you ran the risk of encountering a number of beasts both magical and muggle, or mistakenly touch wet paint still drying on the latest family project (lately it’s the stairs, which are now swathed in rich jewel tones, with the cooler shades at the top and warmer shades at the bottom). Growing up, Artemis was given free reign to do whatever her little heart desired so long as her chores were done, and with so much going on under one roof, the youngest of the Scamander children was rarely bored.
The family cottage in Ottery St Catchpole was an ever-changing, ever-growing part of the family. Located a hop-skip-and-a-jump from Luna’s childhood home, the cottage boasted three floors, gardens, and a chicken coop. Over the years, Rolf and Luna transformed their little patch of whimsical activity into a sprawling, mis-matched cluster of sheds and enclosures to house the countless creatures the couple rescued. To no one’s surprise, the Scamander home soon became an accidental animal sanctuary, and it’s been that way ever since; by the time Artemis was born, the cottage was known fondly as Creature Place and extended all the way to Grandpa Xenophilius’ own garden. Taking care of such a thing was no small task, and even with two adults and three children, there was a never ending barrage of chores and tasks that needed tending to. Her job was looking after the chicken coop, and after a few years, she was tasked with minding the family goat, Cornelius, as well. Artemis never minded; she loved being busy, and she loved taking care of rescued creatures even more. No matter how busy the family was, it was Sunday Night tradition to gather in the living room after supper, and create together. Sometimes they would paint and sometimes they would sculpt, and other times they would renovate a feature of the cottage itself. Whatever it was would be accompanied by hot chocolate and music, and it would last until well after midnight or until the first one fell asleep, whichever came first.
When she wasn’t helping her parents set a hippogryff’s broken wing or wrestling her jewelry from Lorcan’s niffler, Artemis would paint. There wasn’t much in the world she loved to do more than paint, and if she could do it on the roof in the middle of the night after everyone had gone to bed, so much the better. At first she would paint the creatures in the sanctuary, trying to get all the details just right. And then she moved on to capturing the daily rhythms of her family, the way her mother would float from one room to the next, humming to herself, or the way Lysander fidgeted by juggling whatever he happened to be holding. And once she got bored of that, she moved onto the stars and the moon and the paths they trailed through the night sky. Ever since she was a little girl, she had been interested in astronomy to the point of obsession, and was always learning about meteors and black holes and eclipses. On her 10th birthday, her parents bought her a telescope and she spent almost every night that summer watching a whole other universe float by from the comfort of her rooftop, a blanket around her shoulders and a cup of hot chocolate in hand. After that, her paintings were rarely about anything other than galaxies and star clusters.
The year Lorcan and Lysander got their letter, Artemis’ parents hired two kids from the village to help take care of the sanctuary when the twins went off to school. There was no time for Artemis to miss her brothers; the new hires weren’t as quick or as efficient as their predecessors, and Artemis had to pick up the slack more often than not. Still, the twin’s absence was felt in the evenings, after supper, when the remaining Scamanders would sit in the living room with their hot chocolates, and create with three instead of five.
When the following year rolled around and Artemis received her letter, her parents decided to hire someone full-time to look after the cottage and sanctuary so they could resume their worldly travels, something they had to put on hold when they decided to have children. Artemis was sorted into Ravenclaw, surprising no one, and proved to be an apt pupil, eager to learn and please.
Now in her sixth year at Hogwarts, Artemis is more ready than ever to tackle whatever the year throws her way.
