Growing up in a joke shop would probably be most children's dreams, but when you have to wake up early in the morning to sweep up all of the exploded 'Feather Surprise' pellets that had prematurely gone off for the third Saturday in a row, the charm quickly dissipated. He still managed to smile every time he saw a group of friends trying to trick each other into buying something with no idea what it did, watching them attempt to figure it outside, and even felt a sense of satisfaction from hearing their laughter from the shop window. Fred knew what every single item in stock did, and who would probably benefit from it most, but that's mostly because he knew the behind the scenes process. At least he could finally see those smiles.
The first few years of his life were kept very under wraps. As part of the large Weasley family, there were a lot of aunts, uncles, cousins, and family friends to meet, but his father was somewhat overbearing. Angelina gave him the space to work out the complex feelings of naming their child after his brother - his dead brother - for a little while. When George almost snapped at her for wanting to take an almost one year old Fred to the park, she put her foot down. There was trying to protect their firstborn child, and then there was never letting them grow. They both managed to get through it, and his father still had those uneasy periods as Fred grew older and more independent, but they all learnt from each other.
too many shoes, not enough feet
When Roxanne was born, Fred wasn't quite old enough to comprehend having to share his parents' attention. He was used to them being with him every step of the way, and his father especially so, but after a small period of adjustment (i.e. when Fred was five) they became a solid family unit. He was a good son to his parents, and a good big brother to his little sister. But then he had to be a good replacement for an uncle he would never meet, and a good successor to a shop he didn't have a lot of knowledge about, and be good at quiddich, and- It was all too much.
Infant school was hell, and something that he never quite forgives himself for. He knows now that constantly refusing to do the work he was being set and doing something completely different (yet still somehow productive) was a pain, and hitting out at other kids and adults for forcing him to do the 'right' thing was also not great, but try telling a seven year old in a tree pulling out branches that he should be picking sticks up off the ground for his collage. Life lesson: you get a lot of branches thrown at you. He just didn't have the emotional stability to understand why he couldn't focus on the right thing, and why he acted out for the attention.
With enough time and patience, and a lot of alternative lessons taught from various different members of the extended family, Fred calmed down. Well, emotionally at least; he still climbed trees in the middle of the playground but at least now it was during play-time and he could just state he was playing. He enjoyed seeing his friends laugh, and that was all that really mattered for a while.
flying higher and higher
Fred's application form for the Quiddich team was filled out before the sorting hat could tell him that he was in Gryffindor. Both his parents played in the school team, and even though he had some anxieties about trying to fall into another path they had made for him, he had to admit that he really enjoyed playing. He struggled with keeping himself out of detention and in practice at first, but once he finally calmed down enough to make his way onto the field regularly it was clear that there were some things that were definitely hereditary.
Where other interests may have come and gone, trying to aim for that lucrative seeker position was something that stuck with him. Of course, he enjoyed playing beater and all of the antagonising that came with it, but just having the freedom to focus on one part of the game with all of his energy resonated with him. The golden snitch was probably the only thing that could keep his focus for the length of an extended quiddich game, and even focused in lessons where he would have fallen asleep in otherwise. If he didn't finish the work, he couldn't get on the field.
Unfortunately, he's one of those students who appeared to do no work but still get good enough marks. If he actually sat down and tried to study he might graduate with something above an Acceptable in something.
