It's funny, really, because you'd never considered yourself a 'girly' person. Every friend you'd made in your formative years (though they were few and far between) were boys. You guessed you just weren't like other girls, you know? You were special and different, and they were jealous of your beautiful hair. Well - that made sense to you, and it didn't really bother you (much). It was fine that you weren't included in gossip, and didn't get to be a part of hair plaiting circles (until the moments where it wasn't). And your mother told you as much too - she'd tell you how beautiful you were and how mean other girls could be when they chose someone they didn't like, and you tended to agree with her.
Up until the age of eleven, you'd never had a girl friend. Then, very suddenly, on September 1st you had three.
It's funny, but somehow you knew the exact moment all four of you sat down in that carriage and started talking that you were going to bound to each other for life. From the very first "Oh my god, I'm called Harriet" and the second "Shut up - my name's Harriet too" that a bond was forming that would never be broken. This was different to any connection you'd ever had before, and you weren't going to let it go as if your whole life depended on it. This was your tribe. So the minute one of the other girls was sorted, and you were called up to that disgusting old hat, you knew what you had to do - you'd make sure you were with those girls. The hat could barely get a word in edgeways as you insisted to be sorted into Hufflepuff (despite his insistence that other houses might serve you well too) - and what could that scratty old thing say against you, when you showed such loyalty to those girls?
And as each of you sat down one by one next to each other on the Hufflepuff table, grinning and giggling together, a pact was sealed between them. They were the Hatties, and they would be friends forever.
Yes - September 1st. The day that everything changed for you.
