home is where...
Toby doesn’t remember his parents, really. That’s okay with him to be honest. He knows that’s wrong - that’s not what you’re supposed to think, you’re supposed to be obsessed with finding the people who birthed you, but ultimately he’s not really sure what that would achieve. He’s pretty content with the family he’s made for himself, in the kitchens and with his foster family and with his friends. No - he’s got more important things to do with his time than worry about a pair of strangers.
home the first
Honestly, Toby thinks the Hugos have treated him pretty heroically. They’d fostered him when he was seven, when his accidental magic was at its absolute worst, and rather than packing him back to the care home, they’d kept him calm and stuck with him. They’d been the ones sat with him when McGonagall came to their house and explained why everything he’d touched had turned orange for that month when he was eight, and why he seemed to (despite it all) have pretty good luck. They’d taken him to Diagon Alley, and he and his older brother Andrew had tasted Florean Fortescues for the first time together.
He hasn’t taken their surname (yet - maybe one day), and he’s still a foster kid, technically - but they were the first people who gave him a home, and always will be.
home the second
For Toby, unlike a lot of students, he hadn’t had a big ‘merlins pants this is where I’m meant to be’ moment on the paddle boats towards Hogwarts. No, instead he’d had it the moment he’d stepped into the Hufflepuff common room. It was warm, and full, and felt kind of like the moment you bite into a warm and heavily-gravied pie.
He doesn’t get to spend all that much time in the common room - between classes, trying vaguely to stop his mates from burning the castle down, tutoring younger students, and keeping up with extra curriculars, there isn’t much chance to curl up in an armchair and soak in the feeling of being a part of something.
home the third
Half the guys in his dorm were going to "Wizards for a Better World", which would have convinced him to join if nothing else had. Which it had, as a matter of fact - what else would he be doing with his time more important than this?
Toby loved Hogwarts, but it had always felt a bit insular, unconnected to the rest of the world. For someone who spent every summer working with local human rights groups and attending rallies and parades whenever he could, it was amazing to finally have an expression of that in the wizarding world too.
Sitting in that room and listening to those conversations, Toby finally felt hopeful that maybe, one day, the different strands of his homes could come together.
