Dominique's pace was brisk when she walked into the Great Hall that morning. She'd woken up before her usual time to the cold sting of a frosty morning biting at her nose. All the blankets that were piled on top of her were keeping her incredibly toasty, but the telling chill of winter had finally hit the castle, and any part of her body that wasn't under the duvet was subject to the cold. She'd glanced at her clock, briefly debating whether it would be worth trying to fall back asleep again and get that little bit more energy for the school day ahead - NEWTS really were brutal, and any extra time in bed would have been worth it just to help keep her functioning at her best. But she knew that now she was really awake, there was no real hope of her drifting off properly again. She'd sighed a little, but had nonetheless flung herself into action - she'd jumped immediately into a hot shower, the cold in her dormitory moving her along quickly to keep her as warm as she could as she went about her morning routine.
Hence her pace into the Great Hall: brisk.
There weren't all that many people there when she arrived, as they hadn't reached the real breakfast time rush just yet, but there were more people than Dom would have expected to see at that time, happily chatting away over their food. Shivering a little at the chill that was still in the air, she sat down at the Gryffindor table, having not spotted either of her two best friends eating in the Hall. They would come find her later, no doubt, when they'd woken up and saw her by herself. But for now, she was happy to be momentarily with only her own company to enjoy a quiet breakfast, and she started piling some toast onto her plate. She really should have been eating something a little sturdier, like porridge, on a day like this, she knew - but this early in the day she really didn't have that much of an appetite, so the toast would have to do for now. Thankfully, she hadn't been munching on her breakfast for long before the owls started arriving, and her copy of the Daily Prophet dropped in front of her plate. Smiling to herself, she grabbed the paper and placed it next to her plate as she glanced over the front page, taking in the headlines for the day.

If you asked Charlotte, she would always say she was more of a winter person than a summer person. The way the heat rose from the depth of the Hufflepuff dorm always felt like what she imagined a nest of quilts must feel like. It made sleep so easy and getting out of her bed the worst. However she had another reason to get out of bed today, a soft paw meeting her nose followed by a rather loud meow right about her.
The previous night she had been walking the grounds when she saw a small kitten huddled in the snow of the courtyard. How in the world the small cat managed to get into the castle she had no idea but she had no clue what to do with the creature. It could be someones pet, or a animagus or anything! But its soft grey fur and little greens eyes shot right to her soul and there was no way in hell she was leaving it out there all night. Sneaking it into the common room and into her bed had been easy enough but today was classes and the start of the real struggle. She would have to go find her father and talk to him about it, maybe the little kitten could stay in his office or such. However the meowing told her the little bean needed food first and her stomach agreed.
Luckily it was still early for breakfast as she made her way into the great hall and saw a familiar head. Dom, her best friend. With a bag nestled over her front chest she made her way to her friend and sat down, keeping the bag in her lap. Of course she was nose deep in the Prophet, she would expect nothing less from her. "Morning Dom," she greeted simply, knowing better than to interrupt her friend nose deep into a article. Looking around the table as she made a plate for herself she looked into her lap before looking back at her friend. "Do you think cats can eat porridge? Or would they prefer bacon?"

It had long been Dominique's morning routine to have her breakfast while reading the Daily Prophet - it just seemed right, getting the news from the past twenty-four hours as soon as you'd woken up, and to read it leisurely while you ate. It was the only real way to stay completely informed about the world while you were tucked away at Hogwarts, and it really meant a great deal to Dom to keep on top of current affairs. Honestly, she would have loved to have the time to read more than just the Prophet, or even read some Muggle papers, but she had to make do with what she had - Hogwarts was remote and breakfast wasn't really that long. Besides, the Prophet was comprehensive and staffed a wide range of writers with different angles and takes, and Dominique certainly appreciated the scope in just one paper, even if she didn't necessarily agree with everything it had to say.
She bit her lip idly as she turned the page, her eyes skimming over a few more of the headlines - a slow day it seemed, with not much more to report on the Magical Law Office reforms that she'd been keeping her eye on for the past week. Well, there had been a large section of the front page dedicated to it, but there wasn't much to the article that hadn't already been said in the past few days. Thankfully though, there were a few interesting think-pieces on the debacle over the next few pages that were able to catch Dom's eye, so she stopped to read them. Her chewing slowed as she read the article with interest, and the hand that was holding her toast, falling a little limp as she was taken in by what she was reading.
Whether it was twenty minutes or five since she started reading, Dom wasn't exactly sure, but at some point she heard the voice of one of her best friends approach her. She looked up briefly to give Charlotte a smile, but her attention was immediately back on the paper in front of her, after she'd murmured a quiet, "Good morning." She was having to hold herself back from letting out a sigh, as the author she was reading took a turn with his points - she really did struggle with this guy, sometimes he made some really insightful comments on the politics in the Ministry that she could appreciate, but most of the time he really took the most incredible leaps with not one bit of evidence to back it up -
Charlotte was talking to her, and Dom looked up from her paper briefly again, to answer. "I don't really know anything about cats except they're lactose intolerant. So don't give them milk, probably," she replied, her eyes a little distant and unfocused, her attention still really on the paper in front of her. Her gaze had already fallen back to the paper and there were a few long moments of silence as Dom read on before she realised what she was actually replying to, and - cats? At breakfast? She looked up slowly from her paper, and really took in her friend next to her for the first time that morning. Charlotte was tucking in as if everything were completely normal, except there was a conspicuous bag on her lap. That...moved?
Dom blinked.
"Do I want to know why you've got a cat in your bag, or am I better off not knowing?" she asked eventually, heaving a little sigh.

As Charlotte listened to her friend she nodded slightly, letting her mind and eyes wonder the table. No milk got it, psh she was in Care of Magical Creatures and this one wasn't even magic! She could certainly care for a cat, she just needed to figure out her game plan. She had started to grab a napkin to make a small tray for its food and began to tear up very small pieces of food inside of it. A well balanced breakfast, mostly proteins. She didn't know how long the cat had been out in the snow but it was small, it was barley the size of her hand so protein would help the most. She stuck her hand in the bag to pat the small furry head only to receive a sharp snip. "Okay okay i'm going geez." she mumbled to herself, she certainly would be able to chew the food at least, little bugger.
Her friend next to her finally spoke in the usual tone that told her she knew exactly what was going on. "Probably not" she answered honestly as she lowered the now torn up food into her bag. "But you know damn well I am going to tell you anyways." A joke that was honest between the two. No matter what shenanigans that Charlotte seemed to get herself into, Dom would always be at her side for all of it. Pranks, protest, plots alike. The two were inseparable and she planned to never have something come between that.
"I found a cat going back to my dorm yesterday so I'm taking care of her. him? I'm not really sure." she said pat the bag that was in her lap. "I figure I'll run the little nugget to my dad before I meet up Nathaniel for Alchemy." she said simply before taking a bite out of her own food, excited for the day. She knew that her friend was stressed with NEWTS around the corner and it only made her sad. She loved her friends but they were both in their seventh year, and after this year she would have to be without them for a whole school year! How was she gonna survive. All sad thoughts piped out of her head as she perked up with a 'oh!' and reached into the bag, pulling the cat out slightly. "Look Dom! He has a sock!" she said wiggling one of the little grey paws that was covered in white fur instead. "Isn't Grilby the cutest!"

Dom had realised a long time ago that it was really better not to ask about things with Charlotte. The girls had known each other since they were very small and had been close ever since, rollicking around Shell Cottage during all the brunches Dom's mother loved to host - and in that time Charlotte had got herself into so many crazy situations that Dominique could barely keep up with her. She'd tried to keep up, in the beginning - she was young and just as brave as Charlotte was - but there reached a point where it just became impossible. There was always something happening, and frankly Dom only had so much time to dedicate to the random and seemingly crazy things that happened to her friend - so she'd stopped trying to keep up. It wasn't like Dom wasn't interested in what her best friend was up to, but when your best friend is rolling up to breakfast with a kitten in a bag and you're not even vaguely surprised, you realise the kind of shenanigans Charlotte got herself into far too regularly and was a testament to how often Dominique had to deal with these random occurrences.
Honestly, it was all Dom could do to try and repress a deep sigh as she watched her best friend stroke the small creature meowing from the inside of the bag. But still, she listened patiently as Charlotte launched into her explanation - because there was always some kind of story to go with it, no matter how mad it was - nodding slowly as she took in everything. And goodness was there a lot to unpack in what she'd just said. Because well, wow. So she started from the beginning. "You found a kitten?" Dom asked again for clarification, her gaze flickering between her friend's face and the bag. "And you decided to bring it to breakfast?" And well, even as confused as Dom's tone was, she could completely understand the logic of it all. Maybe it was a sign that she'd spend far too much time with Charlotte that she could understand it all, but really what else was there to do if a small animal needed to be nursed back to health? Honestly, she was more just bewildered that it had happened at all, it was far too early in the day to be dealing with this sort of thing - but then again, of course it had happened to Charlotte, of all people. Of course.
When Charlotte pulled the kitten out, Dominique rolled her eyes and gave a little huff, but couldn't help the amused smile on her face as she shuffled a little closer. "Only you would name a kitten Grilby," she said, unable to keep her fond amusement out of her tone. She let herself scratch its head a little, and her heart clenched a bit as it's eyes closed in contentedness. Damn, Dom thought to herself. It really was a cute cat - even if it was distracting her from her morning routine. She supposed she'd let it off - this time. "Well I'm sure your dad will know what to do better than I would," Dom said finally, settling back a little. "I'll go find him with you before class if you want." Because well, she hadn't entirely forgotten that little tidbit in the first part of Charlotte's story. Dom pursed her lips a little before she continued. "When you said you were going to Alchemy with Nathaniel, you didn't mean Nott did you?" she asked, trying her best to keep her tone light.

“Well i couldn’t very well leave it in the dorm. Plus he was hungry, i was hungry. Its a win win situation for all parties.” Charlotte joked as the little bean wiggled in her hands comfortably. She thought about finding the owner, or figuring out where it came from, but the more time she spent the more she wanted to keep it to herself. She was selfish when it came to her being happy, when it came to others she was the opposite. She decided if the cat had a owner she would do everything in her power to return it, it was what was right after all. If not, how could she not keep him. Her? She should really figure that out, she would hate to keep misgendering the cat.
As her friend laughed she rolled her eyes, chuckling to herself. ”Grilby is a suitable name! Besides i just fits!” She protested jokingly as her friend moved in closer, poking her friend with the cats paw. Her poor friend had to be use to her crazy patterns at this point. However she always found new ways to throw off her friend. Keep her on her toes. Putting the cat back in the bag as more people flooded in she nodded. ”I figured he would, plus he can hide him while Im in class.” She said as she agreed to her friends offered. Her dad loved dom of course, was always so proud of her for keeping her voice, something he admitted to not knowing how to use till his later years at Hogwarts. And for keeping his troublesome daughter out of the headmasters office of course. The professor always questioned how his kid could find a way to get into so much trouble honestly. He almost always said it with a smile on his face though.
She nodded again into her breakfast at her friends question, well aware where this was gonna lead. ”Yes Nott. I promise Dom he is not satan incarnate, he isn't that bad. “she was of course well aware of their feud. Once again going for her food she tried to remember a time Nott wasn’t nice to her, sure he wasn’t as nice to Dom as he was her but for as long as she knew him he wasn’t awful. Rather opposite, he helped get her into Alchemy, a class that she finds quite useful now. Revenge is easier ingested after all. She never thought she would take to the course well but he convinced her otherwise and now it is possibly one of her favorites. She always seemed to find a way to make interesting things from it and use them and even more interesting ways. She had Nott to thank for that.

Dom watched Charlotte fondly as she continued to talk about the kitten. One of her friend's main characteristics was her capacity to love, and it was exactly that that Dom so admired in the other girl. They spent so much time with WFABW meetings talking about the things that were wrong with the world around them, that sometimes it was easy to forget that the reason they were doing it was because they all genuinely cared - the leaders of the group especially. Charlotte was such an instinctively loving person, that it was her natural instinct to take this abandoned kitten and make sure it was cared for herself, because that's just what she was like. And it was that, whatever the level of ridiculousness, that meant Dom would never really be all too exasperated with her friend. She did these things because she cared so much for the people around her, and that really, was kind of beautiful - especially when it meant cute kittens were being saved from the onslaught of the weather whipping through the Castle Ground right now.
"What do you think your dad's going to say when you turn up, kitten in hand?" Dom asked, closing her paper. She'd basically caught all the important headlines anyway, and with this sort of drama going on, it wasn't likely she was going to get any more read before class started. She supposed if she was really desperate she could pick the paper up again in a study break and her work was all finished - all the more to motivate her, really. Her attention was back on her friend though. "I mean, he'll look after it, but do you reckon you'll keep it?" Dom supposed it would be quite nice to have a kitten around whenever she went down to visit Charlotte in the Hufflepuff Common Room. And Dom doesn't really know anyone more suited to look after a new pet than Charlotte. Well - there might be a few things that could definitely go wrong, but her heart was in the right place, and you definitely couldn't fault Charlotte's enthusiasm or love, so Dom had no doubt the kitten would be in semi-safe hands.
But there was the thing again. Charlotte with her big heart and open arms. Charlotte who was going to get herself hurt by being manipulated by that snake, Nathaniel Nott. Dom and Nott had loathed each other from the first, but for some reason Charlotte was never around to witness it. Dom had no idea how that had worked out, but it probably had something to do with Nott himself, messing both her and Charlotte around. But no matter how much Dom had warned her, Charlotte had not seen any evidence of Nott's foul attitude, and couldn't understand Dom's dislike of the guy. It was frustrating really, seeing how obviously he was manipulating her and not really being able to do anything about it, but Dom was persistent, and wasn't going to let her best friend be involved with him without all of the facts, no matter how many times she had to say it. Frowning, Dom started, "I wish you wouldn't keep talking to him." Her brows furrowed as her gaze turned hard. "He might be good at Alchemy, but he's vile. He's not worth wasting your time on."

For as long as she could remember Dom had been by her side. Thick and thin. Heart beats and breaks. Dom has seen it all. Charlotte could never understand how she put up with all of this, how any of them could. She knew she was a handful, even though she never meant to be. No matter how many laughs the girls had or the smiles her family shown down on her, she knew that she could be a lot to handle and that's why she was grateful to her. Her dad was always her supporter, call it daddys girl what not but they were no doubt close. She had seen what the world had done to her grandparents, how her father must have grown up watching them. There were some things in the world Charlotte would never be able to fathom, and her dads smile was one of them.
He had every reason to not smile in the world. Yet he persisted. She knew the story growing up, about the war and the part he played in it. He still smiled, persisted none the less. She could do the same. Help others and smile as she did. It was part of the reason she helped Dom found WFABW. She wanted to make others smile so they could do the same. She nodded at her friend as she chewed. "Honestly he probably will just be confused where I found it at. Of course he will take care of it while we settle things but I will probably end up keeping it. As long as Grilby doesn't already have a owner. I'll put word out with the Post about a found cat and see if someone claims it." she said and nodded as if to affirm her response in her mind.
The smiling philosophy that pushed her through life of course wasn't Doms favorite. As soon as the frown pulled up on Dom's face Charlotte also dropped her face. Dom had told her the stories about Nate but it was hard to believe they even were talking about the same guy. Sure he wasn't a saint but he also wasn't a bad guy, at least she had never seen it. Nate was nice, cute and polite, she hardly could see how he was all the things Dom told him. Sure he was a Slytherin, but that didn't mean he was a snake. Sometimes she worried that her family's views poisoned her view on slytherins but she knew better than to assume that. "He isn't Vile honestly. He has never been bad to me at all, in fact he is more kind than anything else." she spoke into her food looking down. Kind, smart, hell even she knew there was no point in denying it, she was crushing hardcore on the older boy. How could she not!? Red crept to her face at the internal admission. "I enjoy spending time with him though. Honestly Dom, I feel like I would know if he was a bad guy. sure he gets stuck in a lot of bad rumors but they've never matched with how he acts with me." Maybe all she needed to do was sit Dom and Nate down and let them talk things out, that could make her see he wasn't a bad guy right?

Dom couldn't say that she'd ever particularly enjoyed Herbology - not because it was bad or the classes were dull or anything like that - the subject just hadn't taken her fancy in the way that say, Muggle Studies had. But despite not really taking it beyond the required years, Dominique had always found the classes with Professor Longbottom to be pleasant. He was a nice man, and always had been as long as Dom had known him, and this translated well into his teaching. Dom had no doubt that he would do his best to look after Grilby as much as Charlotte would, so she smiled a little as her friend confirmed her suspicions. "I'm sure he'll be very happy at your family's newest arrival," she said. She shrugged as she continued, "And I doubt anyone's going to let a kitten wander about outside if they really wanted it, so chances are, he's yours now." The kitten let out a little meow at this, and Dom's lips quirked again. Damn this charming cat.
But no charming cat was enough to distract Dom from the issue that was facing her with the next turn of their conversation. The more Charlotte talked, the more that familiar gut-twisting anger started bubbling up inside her. Her jaw flexed slightly as she grit her teeth, trying with all her might to stay as civil as possible, because she knew, in her heart, Charlotte wasn't to blame for all of this. It's just who she was at a person, trusting everyone that smiled at her, and she couldn't be mad at such a good quality in a person - even if it was currently leading her to make bad decisions. Very bad decisions, Dom thought to herself as her mind supplied her the the image of Nott's smirking face. It was Nott's fault, clearly, because it always was his fault with these sorts of things, so she really ought to be directing her anger in that direction - and she was trying to, really, but she couldn't help if Charlotte got caught in the cross-fire just a little. "Don't be naive," she said, her tone sharp despite her attempts to repress her anger. "Just because someone doesn't act a way in front of you doesn't mean they aren't like that when you're not there."
Dom took a breath, and had another bite of her toast in an effort to try and not get worked up any more. She continued on a few moments later, a little calmer, but having to stare very intensely at the plates in front of her rather than at her friend. "I'm only saying this because I'm worried about you." She sighed a little and chanced a look back up at her friend, her expression a bit softer than before. "I know what he's like, and I don't want him to hurt you. You don't deserve that."
Post by Charlotte Longbottom on Dec 20, 2017 16:53:54 GMT
Charlotte remembered a story that her dad told her when she was younger. For years the youngest Longbottom had cried and cried for a pet, some sort of family animal. However with the constant moving between being at their home and Hogwarts the Professor decided it would be best to wait for the kids to be older. When she protest it was unfair since he had a pet toad when he was young he just laughed and went into a voice that could only tell her she was in for a story. He spoke of Trevor kindly, of the trouble the little toad caused for them both and till the day he was gone. She had asked if he had been sad and in his nature he just gave her a smile and shook his head. 'No, he is a living being just like us. We aren't meant to be in one place forever. He found his own path and fate played into it' Maybe it was fate that she had been to find this little cat was her fate. She nodded at her friends words, sure she knew what she was saying but too focus on gently rolling the kittens white paw in her hand. 'Maybe'
She was pulled out of her thoughts by her friends voice and that word, again. Naive. All her life she heard that word but she never knew how to take it. Good? Bad? She learned to brush it off long ago, just chuckling as her friend spoke and took a sip of her tea. "But being Navie is one of my charming traits." It was to her. There was nothing wrong in seeing the best in people, even if that meant she got hurt sometimes. She never wanted to give people the doubt of them not ever being at their best at all times. People weren't naturally bad, at least thats what she thought. They were molded that way. How else could people like her dad still be good after it all. Innocent until proven guilty right?
The tone of voice Dom had she knew well. It was usually the one she wore when pretty boy was bothering her during club meetings and she was trying not to blow up on the boy. Charlotte had always thought it was funny, until Dom got this voice. She sighed and looked at her friend, well aware of her doing her best to not be angry. Was she this serious about it all? Nate wasn't a perfect guy sure, but nothing she saw ever made her feel like he was deserving of this. Maybe he had another club, maybe he hung out with different people, but was he really that different from them? She couldn't notice if so. she knew there was no use arguing with Dom, it wasn't her style anyway, yet something inside her burned when she said she didn't deserve that. Maybe it would be addressed at another time. Maybe.
"I know you worry, it's what you've always done dom." she said with a soft smile. It was Doms nature, worry. About her, about the world, about herself. Dom was always caring like that. Her face was soft, just like her intentions she knew that much. "I promise I'll be careful. aren't I always" she said with a light nudge of her shoulder, the own inside joke making her laugh. Charlotte careful? Un-fucking-likely. But for Dom she promised she would try to get into less trouble than normal. "Just trust that I know what he's like when hes with me. And if I see any red flags I'll be sure to keep a eye out. And if he is bad he will get pranked so bad he won't know what hit him."

As much as Dom worked best with her words, she'd been told that she often told as much with just a look. She wasn't a particularly effusive person in general, but if she was excited about her work or just plain angry, it really showed on her face. Her eyebrows, her dad had once suggested, dark and thick, made her expressions all that much more emotive. Most of the time it wasn't something Dom was really aware of, and she preferred to say things to avoid the potential of being misunderstood; but Charlotte was one of those rare people that Dom didn't have to say anything for her to understand what she was feeling. It was unnerving on the whole, having someone know you that intimately, but Dom had come to terms with that a long time ago, and if it had to be anyone, she was just glad it was Charlotte. As it happened, it sometimes worked in her favour, because sometimes Dom didn't even have to start any sort of extended rant for Charlotte to get her. Like now, for instance.
Dom levelled her friend with one of her Looks. She hoped that at least would convey everything that needed to be said about what Dom thought about naivety, especially in situations like this. There was a point where naivety turned into wilful ignorance, and Dom wasn't sure she'd call that charming. In fact, she'd probably call that the opposite of charming. A positive turn-off, really - and something Dom would find incredibly hard to stomach from her best friend. But it's okay, Dom thought to herself. She could keep her cool if she really, really tried. For Charlotte. She could do that. Definitely.
But then again Charlotte really was trying her patience by trying to convince her about Nott being a good guy - because really? Really? She could extend leniency somewhat to Charlotte but to Nott there was no chance; so this left her in rather a difficult position. To be forgiving to Charlotte's naivety would also mean letting Nott off the hook - and just the thought of letting him get away with anything that could end up hurting Charlotte kind of made Dom want to set fire to the Slytherin Common Room.
Her friends really asked a lot of her sometimes.
Dom huffed out a sigh as Charlotte bumped their shoulders together, trying to reassure her. She bit off another piece of toast a little more aggressively than was necessary - she had to let it out somehow. "Yes I do worry, and I will worry - because well, you. And him." Her face darkened. "I trust you, but I don't trust him. I don't trust him not to turn it all around back on you, somehow." Dom sighed again, but it was a little less angry this time - a tad more resigned. "I hope you realise that when he does start acting out in front of you, I'm going to take that as permission to try and wipe him off the face of the earth."
Post by Charlotte Longbottom on Dec 28, 2017 22:33:52 GMT
Part of Charlotte knew her weaknesses, issues that she had. The obvious like her forgetfulness or dyslexia, others like the fact he got in trouble with. However her sheer stubbornness always passed her unaware. Ever since she was little once her head got to a certain place it stayed there till some great force could push her out of it. Never once did she doubt herself or her own motives thats the way she was raised. If the world tears you apart keep a stiff spin and keep forward, if it breaks it'll only be because it was meant to. Sometimes it was too stiff for her own good though.
If you asked her who was the most caring person in the world she would say Dom in a heart beat and it was true, her best friend cared more than anyone else in the world and she believed it. She would do anything to help, including pushing her. Charlotte knew just like her, she was stubborn and cared. A deadly combo.
The huff made her smile, her stubbornness and doms stubbornness rarely crashed but when it did it could last for weeks. It never hurt their friendship, it just made them butt heads slightly. As she spoke of worrying and turned to her and kept a soft smile on her face. She wasn't stupid, she knew dom wasn't pleased. That she loathed Nate more than anything else in the world really, well maybe next to Seb, but those can't be the same. "You will worry till the day we die Dom, its your favorite past time." she joked and eat her breakfast. Acting out? Nate? Was this the same person they were talking about? Charlotte shrugged it off and laughed at her friend. "If he does that then you don't get to wipe him off the face of the earth. We get to." She laughed but knew it was true. No matter what happen, if she was wrong or right, Dom would have her back. Nothing would ever come between the two, no matter what. Dom may hate him but Charlotte was the mastermind of all the revenge scheme. And should anything ever happen between her and Nate, Dom wouldn't need to do much. She could take care of it herself. There were moments, however brief they may be, that Dom wished she could be a little less harsh sometimes. She didn't think about it all too often - it was vanity, really, worrying about how other people perceived her and ninety-nine percent of the time she really didn't care all too much. She had a very strong sense of self, and was never anything but true to who she was - and honestly, it didn't really make her feel all that bad when people didn't like her. She wasn't insecure in the same ways she saw her dorm-mates were sometimes - she had far too thick a skin to let herself be bothered by people's perceptions of her. But all that being said, Dominique wasn't completely immune to those moments where she wished she could just...tweak herself, ever so slightly. Dominique knew that she could be a lot to deal with, to put it politely, and she had one of these brief moments that morning as she was watching her best friend talk to her.
She supposed Charlotte could do with a friend who wouldn't treat her so harshly, and momentarily it crossed Dom's mind whether she was being a good enough friend. Charlotte had plenty of other friends, as was only natural for the girl's happy and friendly nature, and none of them were quite as stern or intense as Dom was - none of them would probably berate her over something so potentially inconsequential as a friendship. If Dom were a little less forthright, perhaps this whole thing could have blown over without no need for harshness towards a good friend? But this thought was quashed almost as quickly as it came to her - because Dom could only ever be Dom, and even if she wished to be softer, nothing could make her ignore the potential threat of Nate's friendship. It was a wobble, there was no doubt about it, and it arose out of concern about one of the most important relationships of her life - it was only natural to doubt her actions in relationships that held that so much importance to her. But Dom knew, that in the end she had a duty to protect Charlotte above all, and Nate might get in the way of that, so there really wasn't much question of how Dom should try and pursue it otherwise - because if Dom did nothing and let Charlotte be steamrolled by this guy, she'd never forgive herself.
With that in mind, Dom scowled into her food a little as she replied to her friend. "Yes, I worry - but it's always with reasons behind it, which is what I'd hoped you'd get," she said. "I'm not just being contrary for the sake of it, I have reasons for telling you to give him a wide berth." She sighed (again) and finished off the last bit of her toast, as Charlotte spoke of their revenge, which seemed an inevitable outcome in Dom's mind at this point. "I know you're trying to placate me with ideas about getting him back, which is sweet of you," Dom said eventually turning to face her friend properly again, "but it also didn't work at distracting me." She paused. "I don't know if revenge is going to be worth it if it means he's already hurt you."

Yes, I worry. Charlotte couldn't say she blamed her. For as long as the two have known each other they were a volatile pair that were constantly into trouble. If it wasn't for Vance who knows what would have happen to the two by now. They were both so opinionated, so right in their ways they often missed their mark in good. But nonetheless they persisted.
She plucked at her food as Dom spoke, heavy with breath and concern. It was something Charlotte could wrap her mind around. Nate being.. if he was ever... She couldn't understand. True she had never been in the room with the two of them together, but she didn't understand how the two could be so different. They were only ever nice to her, she cared about them so much. If anything ever happen with them she didn't know what she would do honestly.
Dom was her best friend, simple told. She trusted her with her life ten fold and knew that she was looking out of her. Nate was a good friend who was never anything Dom said he was. He was kind and helpful and always made her smile. Maybe she could make them understand each other? It had to be some sort of misunderstanding or something like that. anything that she could wrap her head around.
"None of my ploys ever work to distract you." she joked lightly and wiggled her fork at her friend. Lightening the mood was always Charlotte specialty. In club meetings, class, where ever she was she always tried to brighten the mood. "placating you never goes as plan sadly." She didn't know what to say to her friends words though. 'If he has already hurt you'. In her mind he wouldn't. This is the same boy that would walk out of class to meet her, who tells her stories and goes to the kitchen with her. Of all the people who might hurt her, she never would expect Nate. But Dom had never lied to her before. Inside she was conflicted and the smile fell from her face. She no longer felt like joking. "can we change subjects" her voice was soft and unlike her, its how she felt.
A soft meow brought her back from it all, looking down her lap a small nose popping out brought her from her thoughts and back into the real world. She soft meow was followed by another and once again a smile appeared on her face. There were more important things than her feelings. There were always more important things than themselves, Dom and Charlotte both knew that very well. Looking back at dom she smiled slightly. "Did you still want to come with me to my dads office? I should probably catch him before he heads to class."

Dom, in general, thought of herself as a compassionate person. She cared - a lot - about other people and their well-being. Generally, that is. Her issue was that while she focussed on groups of people, and she supposed, society as a whole, her lofty ideals meant that she had the tendency to lose sight of the smaller picture. That, in the pursuit of the general good, she let her get ahead of herself, and a lot of the time she forgot about the individual and how they might feel. For as much as she cared for the People, she sometimes got stuck dealing with a person right in front of her. It was a puzzling disconnect, and she was far from self-aware about it - generally she relied on her closest friends who were a little more rooted in the reality of dealing with others in a way that Dom was not. They were the ones to gently remind her in their own ways that she had to be a little more considerate of people's feelings.
All of this considered, it shouldn't be very surprising to anyone that Dom's bluntness and matter of fact approach to things often led to some people getting hurt by her. And there weren't a lot of people in the world that would make Dom stop and question herself about all of this - but Charlotte was one of them. And look - it wasn't even that Dom was questioning herself because she knew that she was right - Nott was bad news, and she didn't want her best friend being caught up in his circle of...badness, or whatever - but Charlotte's despondency at the conversation did give Dom a reason to pause. Because that wasn't the way Charlotte was supposed to react to things - Charlotte wasn't meant to be sad at breakfast with a kitten in her lap. Charlotte was meant to take things in her stride and be upbeat and positive. Hm.
"Hmmm," Dom hummed out loud, not really sure of what else to say. Because Dom, although observing her friend was upset, was also not the type of person to lie or say something she didn't believe in. She knew what she said about Nott to be true, and frankly she didn't regret voicing it either - but she didn't like the way it had made her best friend feel, even if she knew it to be true. She wouldn't take it back...but she also wasn't going to add to the fire - not now, when she was responding like this. She'd have to leave it again until a later and more convenient time. Finishing up her toast, Dom watched as Charlotte steered the conversation away from Nott and back to the matter that had started the whole conversation in the first place, and she let her. Dom realised she probably wasn't the best person to be having these kind of emotional conversations with - she'd have to mull this whole thing over a little bit more, she guessed.
"I'd love to," she replied to her friend with a smile. "If only to see how your Dad reacts." She closed up her Daily Prophet and tucked it into her satchel, ready to read at the next opportunity. She might not have the chance to read it as thoroughly as she liked today though - Dom suspected that after this conversation with Charlotte she'd be mulling over the entire thing, and would end up having some soul searching conversations with Vance about it all.
