April 2026
Lily adjusts her cardigan in the mirror with Anais' voice going round her head screaming 'pick something nice then dress it down' (naturally followed by some probably expletive in french that she's never bothered to ask anybody to translate. She doesn't need to know) and she can't help but roll her eyes at her own internal monologue. She's not even sure if its actually a date and yet her stomach is swirling and her heart beat keeps racing and honestly, Lily, calm yourself down.
Its not the first time she and Jasper have hung out together. Its not even the first time they've hung out together alone since she got back. In fact, its the fourth time in as many weeks, and only one of those wasn't pre-arranged. The first time she'd seen him in nearly five years and he'd been buying pre-made potions at the apothecary. Lily had been horrified, he'd made some quip about his regular brewer disappearing to travel the world.. and then somehow they'd ended up spending the day together? Wandering around Muggle London and watching the sunset from a park on top of a hill drinking weak and fruity alcohol from brightly coloured tin cans... The next week, he'd suggested they go and play mini-golf at some free course set up in the financial district and when she'd agreed he'd just replied with "Its a date!"
Its. A. Date.
Jasper said the same thing every time they arranged to do something and then had the audacity to not kiss her or make any sort of move, but to make her blush constantly and feel like the most important person in the world when she was with him and then not. fuck kiss. her.
She sighs at her reflection, but she's happy with the dress she's chosen - two years ago it belonged to Dani but Lily had borrowed it somewhere in North America and it was hers now, forever. The floral print is light and the style is loose fitting so should be fine for whatever they're doing, no matter what that turns out to be. It's Jasper's turn to choose.
That voice is still going round her head. She toes off the ballet flats and goes digging for her leather jacket.

The weather in London, like always, had deceived him. He was always so desperate to see the sun, that even the glimpse of its beams on a morning would make him think it was peak summer, and that let him conveniently forget that at this time of year the minute that sun went behind a cloud, you'd be cold. It had been nice for most of the day, and he'd set out to enjoy his day out and about without much thought to what he'd feel like in the evening without a proper jacket on - and, to be fair to him, he'd been having a great enough time that he barely had time to give it much thought. It happened that Seb, a friend he'd made in Berlin a few years back, was in town with a couple of mates and wanted a catch up. Well, Jasper had never been one to say no to day drinking, so he'd spent most of the day stretched out in Regent's Park, a tinny of Pimms in hand, catching up with old friends while making some new ones.
They'd tried to convince him to stay when he finally begged off, hours later and the sun was starting to go down. The group was starting their pilgrimage to the nearest pubs for a bite to eat with their next pints, and made their signature noises of protest when Jasper reminded them that he already had plans for the evening. He'd briefly considered inviting them along - honestly, Jasper found it one of life's true pleasures bringing people together to have a good time, and he already knew that it was going to be a fun night - but ultimately choose against it. They might have drifted in the past few years, but he'd known Lily since she was a teenager, and she'd never seemed the type to enjoy the company of a group of strangers thrust upon her without advance warning. Besides, they'd been doing these little outings to catch up with each other. It wouldn't really be the same kind of night he'd imagined if it was spent with a load of new people in the way. And in the end, who knew where the night would go? If they were tipsy enough later he could suggest meeting up with the group in town, and he told them as much when he said his goodbyes.
"I dunno what our plans for later are yet," he said honestly, putting away his quiv as he stood up. "I'll hext you, if you're all still out."
"Do. If you're not too busy on the pull," Seb replied. "The night is young, Kirkey."
Jasper had given his friend a look, while some of the others laughed, but didn't bother correcting him before he left. He'd already explained earlier in the day when he'd first told his friends he'd have to jet off at some point in the early evening that he'd be off to meet up with another old friend. He knew the real mistake had been when he'd shown him her Wiztagram - the minute Seb knew he was meeting up with a pretty girl, the winking and nudging hadn't really stopped. But it was fine, really. After all those years of Hogwarts in the social circles Jasper ran in, it was the sort of jeering that you got used to - especially considering the reputation he'd gained for himself for sleeping with people he was friends with. Really, he had no leg to stand on, so he learn to stop protesting after a while.
So he'd left the group and apparated over to Shoreditch, where he now stood leant up against a nearby lamppost, fag in hand as he waited for his companion.

By the time Lily actually leaves the house she's slightly changed her outfit about half a dozen times. She's still wearing the same dress, but she's also wearing hefty combat boots, a leather jacket, and a random bracelet she'd found a the bottom of the handbag she decided to swap to and has no idea where it came from.
Its not as cold as she was expecting it to be, but she likes the way the jacket looks so she's not too bother. Besides, when she gets inside and takes it off the fact she's wearing the boots will keep the aesthetic she was going for. Definitely moreso than any of the previous outfit iterations she'd tried on would have. At one point, she thinks she was wearing wool tights. What a mistake that would have been.
Lily pauses on a corner to check where she's going, the map loading slowly on her out-dated quiv. (She kept telling herself she'd get a new one once she got home, but she hasn't got round to it yet) She's next to a logo indicating a tube station, although she's not entirely sure which one it is. It shouldn't matter though. She shouldn't need to get it. Admittedly, she'd apparated to one of the authorised spots in East London before really looking at where she needed to go, but she had at least checked with apparition spot was closest so now its just time to wander. Half the fun of going somewhere new is the possibility of getting lost, and she knows Jasper won't mind if she's not exactly on time so there's no anxiety about letting that happen.
Finally her quivlet loads showing her what it thinks is the best route, but Lily can see a way to cut some corners by zigzagging side streets that looks more fun - even if it does have the potential to throw her out somewhere unexpected.
She spots him in the distance at the end of the road before he sees her. As she's expecting, he's facing in the other direction. You know, the one where you can see both ways down City Road which is where most other people would be coming from.
"Why are you smoking those when you could be smoking something much more fun?" Lily asks when she's about two feet away from where Jasper is leaning, "Or is whatever you've got planned something you'd prefer to remain sober for?"

While he had the time to stand there, cigarette burning away in his hand, Jasper had time to let his mind wonder as he people watched. With the weather being the way it was, there were plenty of people out and about in central muggle London, especially at this hour where people were coming out for their post-work drinks. He let his eyes drift from group to group - there was one guy, his hair tied up in a messy top knot, gesturing wildly to his friends as they walked down the street together, that caught his eye. He was handsome, Jasper noted with a weird kind of detachment that he wasn’t altogether used to. Perhaps he wasn’t handsome enough - but then, Jasper wasn’t sure when he’d let his standards get that high. He was somewhat notorious in school for getting in the bed of just about anyone that invited him. Maybe this new development of discernment between potential partners meant he was finally an adult. But he wasn’t sure what exactly that meant in the grand scheme of things regarding, you know -
It was one of those alarming moments that the person gracing your thoughts appears in front of you the exact same minute that you start thinking about them. He blinked rapidly but was happy enough when he turned around to greet her, a crooked grin settling on his face. “The night is young, Potter,” he said, his eyes twinkling with laughter. “And I’m better at this drunk than high. Hazard of only ever playing when I’m in a pub.” He took one last deep inhale, and flicked away the butt of his cigarette, ignoring the voice in his head that sounded like Dom Weasley accusing him of littering. “Shall we?” he said, tilting his head as to not to exhale the last bit of smoke in her face, but gestured her to follow him into the bar.
The noise of the bar settled around him as he stepped inside, the loud but comfortable din of people eating, drinking and competing amongst friends. He caught the server’s attention gave her his name for their reservation, and as she went about sorting it out for them, he turned his attention back to Lily. “I hope you’re ready for a bit more competition with this one,” he said with another smile, leaning against a pillar near him, head cocked back and hands in his pockets. “And drinking, obviously. Lots of heavy drinking.” A cheer went up a little way away, a woman jumping up and down in celebration, darts in hand. “You ever played darts before?”

Being with Jasper was always the most calming of experiences. Its like the minute she got near him Lily could feel every other care she had in the world drift into the ether, especially when his focus was on her. And the thing about hanging out with him on his own was that his focus was always on you. That's the kind of person he was, and always had been: fully in the moment, and if that moment was with you then that's entirely where his mind was. At least, that's what it felt like.
"The night is indeed young," she agreed easily as Jasper finished his cigarette, "But I reserve the right to leave early if you've chosen something shite." Lily grinned at him, knowing that even if she did hate whatever they were doing that was absolutely not true. The night would just take them elsewhere.
Anyway, it wouldn't be shite. Lily trusted him to choose something she'd enjoy, even if really they barely knew each other. Well, they barely knew this version of each other. She couldn't help but wonder though what it was though, if it was something he knew for a fact he was better at drunk than high? Colour her intrigued AF. She'd made an effort to not look at the signage around them too closer as she'd arrived to keep the secret as long as possible - and honestly in case she got her hopes up for something specific only for them to walk off to a different location. Shoreditch was full of places full of novelty, in varying degrees of success. It really could be anything.
She didn't bounce after him, she'd swear on it.
The fact Jasper had booked and not just waited until they'd turned up gave her a feeling she was really trying not to focus on, but at the same time was determined to enjoy. That warm bubble of unadulterated joy that on its own felt more intoxicating than anything she could ever wish to brew. And look, even if this never became what a part of her hoped it might, she could still enjoy having a crush. That was allowed. Besides, she wasn't about to become a bumbling mess about it.
"Competition? From you?" She smirked. Every activity they'd been on so far she'd decidedly and spectacularly whooped his arse. He didn't have a competitive bone in his body and she... well, she really did.
It dawned on her though that this time felt different. There was something in the air. In the bar all around them, yes, but also emanating from Jasper himself. He reeked of confidence for once and, as much as she enjoyed the feeling, it made her falter. And then he told her what they'd be doing and she stopped still. Took in her surroundings. The long banks filled with groups both big and small. The movement in the air. The cheering.
Lily looked up at him once she'd taken it all in, "I've never held a dart in my life," she admitted, as they moved to follow the beckoning waitress. Away from the crowds closest to them and down some stairs where there were even more "oches" (as she was told they were called, she personally didn't have a clue) equally as full and, thankfully, another bar.
She honestly zoned out as the server explained how it all worked. Something to do with the boards being electronic and there being game options... Lily instead was watching the oche closest to them and trying to discern the best way to stand and throw from their current player who was making a Big Show of his set up. Until he groaned after his dart hit the board and instead she decided to forget every mental note she'd taken as he'd prepped his throw.
Lily turned to Jasper as she took off her jacket, "I'm gonna need a shot before I try this. Tequila?"

Hanging out with this Lily was really nice in a way Jasper can’t say he ever really expected. He’d had the idea so fully formed in his head, of her as the small troubled teen who supplied him with questionable potions in Hogwarts - of them only speaking in the context of her (what Jasper way later came to realise it was) business. There had to be a significant recalibration when they’d run into each other in that apothecary - obviously she looked different, she was years older than the last time they’d seen each other, but so much about the air around her had changed too. She lacked the heavy, displeased aura she used to carry around with her in school. She’d been so small, and it was always hard to forget the first time they’d met, her almost shivering in fear and panic, doing her best to curl away from the world.
This Lily didn’t shy away - there was an openness, a freedom - a lightness like she’d finally been able to start stripping away all the burdens she’d been carrying throughout her teenage years. He’d always liked her - he thought she was spunky, and though her spikiness was a little alarming for Jasper’s softer tendencies, their relationship had worked for the time for what they wanted. Jasper had got his highs, and she had got her - well, whatever it was he supposed she wanted from him. He’d never really questioned it up until now, though he supposed he was probably the first person she’d come across who was - let’s say adventurous enough to try her concoctions without fear for their own personal safety.
But this was different - for the first time, they were actually able to smile together. Not only a new development, but one that Jasper really had never thought of as a possibility. Not ever. Not until recently. The banter was already there before they’d even settled down next to an oche, and it flowed without either of them having to really think about it. That was what felt so good about it. “Look, I know I haven’t exactly been bringing my top game,” he started in reply as the followed the waitress weaving through the bar. “And regularly I am pretty shit at most things, but I am quietly confident this time.” He paused to consider this with a laugh. “No, actually, fuck that, I was being too nice. I’m here to impress today, it’s going to be good.”
Rules explained, Jasper flashed their waitress a happy smile and thanked her for her help before she disappeared and left them alone. He’d wondered briefly whether it would be Lily’s thing - there was a significant amount of thought put into their...outings (if that’s what you’d call them? He wasn’t really sure, there wasn’t a name being put on any of it) and the last thing he wanted to do was make her feel uncomfortable, but this felt right, no matter how out of her depth she claimed to be with the game. It was simple enough, the bar and atmosphere were great, and he could help her along if she wanted it. Hell, she’d dragged him through most game related things they’d gotten up to together, it was only fair for her to have a rest from all the heavy lifting.
“Oh fuck yeah,” Jasper said, with enthusiasm, already pulling out his wallet. “Have fun figuring out that muggle tech, I’ll bring some over.” Before she had opportunity to protest, he nipped off to the bar to get their drinks. And before he could stop himself, he was getting them two shots each - because like, why the fuck not he was here to have a good time and start as you mean to go on etc. etc. - as well as ordering a few drinks to be brought over later for them to drink as they go. And as he thought about it, it would probably be a good idea to order some food to come with them because he wasn’t as spritely as the Jasper Lily knew at Hogwarts, and couldn’t get away with so much bad behaviour anymore. Good calls all around, he thought.
With an ease that only came with lots of experience, Jasper balanced the handful of shots all the way back over to Lily, limes, salt shaker and all. “Hope you’re ready to get fucked up,” he started casually, depositing the debris on the table. Without pause he started getting himself sorted, licking a stripe on his hand for the salt to cling to and tapping it out - before holding up the shot glass to cheers the redhead. “To darts!” he called, clinking his first shot glass to hers and beginning the ritual, savouring the flashes of salt, bitter and sour hitting his taste buds in quick succession.

It shouldn't have been such a turn on, Jasper telling her he was there to impress. From anyone else it wouldn't have been either - no asshole had ever managed to get her into bed with sheer cockiness alone. Usually that attitude made her roll her eyes and count backwards from 10 but... well, this wasn't Jasper's usual attitude. That was the difference. If he was trying to impress her then it wasn't all talk, he was actually good at this.
Merlin, she wanted to jump him. The thought surprised her as it flashed through her mind but once it was there she just... couldn't shift it. Up until now every time they'd hung out she'd convinced herself afterwards that it had been purely platonic, that this was a crush that could be tempered. But the more they hung out the more the crush lingered and Lily got closer to the point of not being able to get over it without some sort of actual closure. She wasn't sure what form that needed to come in - sticking her tongue down his throat, maybe? She shook her head to herself, glad he was off at the bar and she was alone with her thoughts for a second. She wasn't sure that that would be enough. Not now. He was stuck in her head and her body was reacting and
where was he with that tequila?!
There. Talking. And, oh yeah, something was going to get fucked alright if she had anything to do with it. Not necessarily tonight but... She laughed, licking a stripe across her thumb as she gestured for the salt shaker, "Let's do this!"
Salt. Tequila. Lime. She grinned around the rind in her mouth and sucked as much juice from it as she could get out of it before she discarded it on the table, next to her upturned shot glass.
"So, how does this work then?" Lily started as she moved towards the controls at the end of the oche. There was a screen that she presumed controlled the dartboard - even though a dartboard didn't require electronics muggles seemed to love to add flashing lights and noises to anything possible and Lily, for one, enjoyed their innovativity.
As she tapped the screen a few times she was delighted to realise that it wanted them to add nicknames and to take a picture of each of them to go with it too. Lily wasted no time in putting both their names in, The Master for her (no potions before it, given the overwhelming muggleness of the establishment), The Artist for him, and then a countdown started on their screen to prompt a picture was to be taken. Imminently.
"Quick, pose!" The exclamation came accompanied by an outstretched arm in his general direction - behind her? To her left? Somewhere close she wasn't paying attention but the 3 turned into a 2 was going to turn into a 1 and the FLASH of a camera was surely to come next.
